100% correct about Fornals. Possibly his worst ever game for us. I think he was trying too hard to impress in his first club game in his home country. Ineffective and culpable for the (free kick leading up to the) goal. If we are to progress that yellow card for Zouma could also hurt us further. Hopefully he redeems himself on Thursday

You people knocking Soucek and Vlasic, did see that they were involved in most of our good chances?

Also a bit irrelevant I suppose, but for there goal, that wasn't a foul by Zouma he stuck his leg out and kicked the ball, then the Sevilla player fell over his leg. Not sure why Fornals was fucking around trying to pass to Zouma, that was where things started to go wrong. Both Dawson and Soucek were freeish to pick up the goal scorer, but no one saw him at the back there.

I just watched the extended highlights on whufc.com

Lanzini played DM well before for us. I would play Lanzini behind so Tommy can get forward in the box as Wolves and get his head on crosses, Rice can also make those forward probing runs and have a shot or three.

The crowd were definitely their 12th man last night. We looked a bit wobbly after they scored, and the crowd could sense that. Need to make it as intimidating as possible next week. Lovely city, and good to see people passionate about their football.

I totally agree. I’m not normally into that ‘twirly scarf’ routine, but even that had a good effect as well.

All-in-all, despite the result, it was an excellent day out and my Mrs now wants to go there for a long weekend after having seen all the photographs that I’d taken.

Sir Alf

The first bit about you and seeing ( or lack of ) Benrhama do all that is truly you in drunken spiral.
It was Fornals in the corner and anyone of him,Cresswell and Zouma could of cleared it with a punt.
I briefly read the rest of that shit you wrote. Vlasic's chance was easier to score than miss. Antonio's had milli seconds to react. Should still of connected though.
Best you have an early night I am.

Re: ⚽ Sevilla v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT 1-0 (1st leg)
Ok, as always, my post below comes with a health warning. In my usual, "why use one word when 50 will do" style it may cause many to reach for sharp objects or simply nod off in front of an open fire or lose the will to live .. so be warned. :-)

Firstly, on the subject of Vlasic, maybe I was drunk or been on the crack pipe but I thought he had a decent game and especially first half. Was neat and tidy as usual with the ball and did not give it away. Think I only saw him muscled off it once too. 2nd half as Seville upped their game and possession he was just not getting the ball and I understand why he was subbed for Benrahma but I am not sure it helped. In fact, it backfired really as it was Benrahma they decided to pass back to Zouma when he ( Benrahma ), Cresswell and Zouma were being pressed hard into the corner. It was a pass that Zouma was 2nd best to get and led to him committing a foul to prevent the attacker getting past. In turn in led to the goal. There is an argument that we should have "ale housed" cleared it earlier but the little triangle passing was overplayed by Benrahma. And that's the biggest problem I personally have with Benrahma. Gives it away far too easily by trying to get past players when often in his own half but also his passing is not good enough. His other issue, is no end product. He is in his 2nd season and seems unable to develop his game to Premiership standards.

Vlasic is a little different. He may not ever make the leap needed to become a fixture or even useful member of the first team but for 45 mins yesterday I thought, as mentioned, he was decent and worth his place and tbf he also got a decent shot off later in the 2nd half that the keeper did well to save. More than Antonio has done for weeks. Yeah he should have headed the earlier chance down when he got his chance but he did get a decent amount of power on his header that was a nice hight for the keeper and hence saved. And on Vlasic, until he is played centrally I do not think we know if he is a dud or not.

Anyway, returning to that Vlasic chance, I thought the missed rebound by Antonio it caused was far worse and yet more evidence that class is permanent and form temporary. It was lSunday league stuff in some senses?. Antonio had his purple patch ( temporary :-) ) and as others say, he is back to what he has always been... agricultural. a technically mediocre player that provides power and pace to get in behind teams that press too high or generally get caught on the counter. He is not good enough for a team that wants to play to feet and keep possession, and probably the worst passer of the ball as helacks the ability to control a football on a consistent basis. Does not take the weight out of a pass and invariably it cannons off his shin etc. Not what we need in many games against better opposition or teams that sit deeper and press well. He is not alone. Benrahma, Soucek, Dawson, even Zouma at times need to be better with their passing and yesterday with a good pressing team like Seville, the likes of Fornals and Lanzini ( decent technical players usually ) were giving it away or getting caught in possession.

Anyway, lets pray he finds a purple patch of form again before the end of season or faces teams that do not press him too hard. But, again as others say, we do not need a player up front as another option to Antonio we need a forward to replace him as first choice.

Returning to more optimistic thoughts, we are still in the tie and for a 20 min spell after they scored, where we were camped in our own half and could not get a kick, that is a positive.

We are going to have to have everything go for us 2nd leg though to get through and if I'm honest I think it unlikely but, like I say, we have a chance and thus cannot complain.

The summer transfer business is probably the most important thing we need to get right. We are at a pivotal point. Get it largely right and we have a chance of consolidating ourselves in the top 6 or 8 teams and having a better chance of cracking the top 4 and cups. Get it wrong or getting one or two signings wrong as we have arguably done with Benrahma and possibly Vlasic

Re: ⚽ Sevilla v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT 1-0 (1st leg)
Playing Rice further forward will diminish his strengths. Which is moping up,making great tackles then striding forward. His passing, shooting and all round play screams out for an outlet down the left like Bowen
Diaz would of been that man, pity for whatever reason we didn't get him. Hope it wasn't because we made a derisory offer.
The difference between Soucek and Rice is Rice has progressed emensley. Soucek an unknown force. Now teams have adapted to him. It happens. Rice is just a better player. He has a fantastic brain. He is similar to Gerrard . Maybe if we had 3 in midfiled Soucek on the right,Rice in the middle and a better all round player than what we have on the left then that would be the ultimate.combination.

You will find that a lot of european clubs encourage a partisan atmosphere which they hope will intimidate the visiting team and increase the the home advantage. You will also notice that they position the visiting fans up in the gods some where where its difficult for them to be heard or noticed
As we all know Newcastle do this at St James Park but you could argue that it hasn't helped them much in more recent years. However, i do think the Leeds fans and the Geordies certainly buoyed their sides in their most recent visits to the London Stadium although a fair distance from the pitch, like the rest of us but.not high up in the gods or tucked away in a corner.

It is the Sevilla midfielder Ocampos who also got booked that misses the second leg, not Rice

Re: ⚽ Sevilla v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT 1-0 (1st leg)

The level of noise they created went up a notch in the second half and its no coincidence that their teams performance also picked up.

I was actually really impressed with how their whole crowd joined in unison. They made a lot of noise even though the stadium was 80% without a roof. Our home support could learn a few things from them.

Also surprised how many women were in the crowd (some in large groups) and how they were really getting iinvolved.

Re: ⚽ Sevilla v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT 1-0 (1st leg)
I was there last night and I actually thought that Seville looked fairly ordinary until their ‘Ultras’ at the opposite end to us started to ‘Up the Ante.’ It then seemed to spur them on a bit.

Without many of their fans at our place then they shouldn’t be able to spur them on, like last night.

Re: ⚽ Sevilla v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT 1-0 (1st leg)
Just got to Seville train station waiting for train back to Malaga. An unbelievable day yesterday with our incredible support. A truly blinding day that lived up to all expectations, not ready for it to end yet…..hoping we can get a result on thursday but do we look like sscoring 2 goals at the moment?

On the game, it was a 0-0 game 100%. Neither team had alot of chances and neither keeper made a great save. Very very poor goal to concede, we just swithced off. As said below though, we just arent good enough going forward for the last few months. We dont create like we used too and Fornals and Vlasic off no goal threat and no quality at all in the final third. Soucek has also lost his goal threat, we’re in the tie still….but i dont think Sevilla will be too worried. We need Bowen back massivly, and we need to add quality into our attack in the summer. Ive been saying for months how bad Fornals is going forward and last night was prime example, fuck knows what Moyes is thinking putting him RW for last 25 mins. Would of been better playing Fredricks out there and using his pace to try get in behind. We’re so one dimensional in how we attack, no plan b, no options to change it. Also what was Moyes thinking taking Lanzini off for Noble for last 10 when 1 down?!?! Like the team the manager has also been poor since Christmas.

Anyhow onto Thursday, stadium will certainly be rocking, first goal is massive. Safe flights to any of you still out here, cant believe its pissing down for 4 hours after yesterdays sunshine!!!

You need to read back through some of the posts Fraser.

As far as I am concerned he has sacrificed his best role to accommodate Rice

As someone said it would be good to see someone sit behind him and Rice and let them get forward a bit more, I'd be tempted to try Kral but I know Moyes doesn't rate him.
